About this app
The hill, the river and the town are built from real measurements: the heights of the ground, the course of the Yantra, the walls, paths and buildings of OpenStreetMap, and the excavated foundations traced from the archaeologists’ plan of the citadel. The churches were modelled from their plans, their published dimensions and many photographs.
Every story was researched in Bulgarian and English sources and checked a second time. Where historians disagree, we say so; legends are told as legends.
Much of what stands on Tsarevets today was rebuilt between 1930 and 1985 on the medieval foundations — the gates, the walls, Baldwin’s Tower and the Patriarchal church among them.

The app collects nothing about you. There are no accounts, no sign-up, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies. It never asks for your location, your camera, your microphone or your contacts.
The app remembers a few settings in your browser, on your own phone: the season and the clouds you chose, whether the sound is on, how loud the music and the sounds of the hill are, and which of the little tips you have already seen. They are never sent anywhere, and clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them.
Everything the app shows — the 3D hill, the pictures, the music and the stories in each language — comes from our own website, tsarevets3d.com. As with any website, the company that hosts it (Cloudflare) processes the technical requests, including your device’s IP address, in order to deliver the files, and does so on our behalf. We do not use them to identify you or to follow what you look at.
The “Now” light comes from your phone’s clock: the sun and the moon are worked out for Veliko Tarnovo, not for where you are.
Only two links lead out of the app — our email address and our website, cultura-compass.com — and they open only when you tap them.
Under the GDPR you have the right to know what personal data an organisation holds about you, to receive a copy, to have it corrected or erased, and to complain to a data protection authority. We hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing to hand over or delete. If you write to us, we use your message only to answer it.
The app is made for everyone, families included. We collect no personal data from anyone, of any age.
The 3D hill asks a lot of a phone. It may grow warm and its battery may run down faster than usual, and the first visit downloads about 35 MB, with the music streamed as it plays — worth knowing on mobile data.
If what the app does with data ever changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated.
This page was written in English and translated into the app’s other languages. If a translation and the English ever differ, the English applies.
